Toadal Maya Cave Expedition - 4 days/ 3 nights
Day 1 :
Depart Placencia this morning driving west towards the Cayo
district. Our drive takes us through the scenic Hummingbird highway. We
will stop at Blue Hole National Park for a chance to take a cooling swim.
Once at our resort, we will have a relaxing lunch and time to enjoy the
scenic beauty of the surrounding area. You might try one of the resorts
optional activities including horseback riding. L/D
Day 2:
This morning we are up early to drive into the site of Tikal in
Guatemala. A local archaeological guide will tour us through the plazas,
temples, and pyramids of Tikal, explaining the culture of the ancient Maya.
A trip to the archaeological museum will give you another perspective of
Tikal and the Maya. After our tour, we will drive back into Belize. O/N
San Ignacio. B/L/D
Day 3:
Today we explore the Maya underworld at the cave of Actun Tunichil
Muknal. This awesome cave takes you where ancient Maya performed
rituals so closely connected to their culture. Ancient Maya artifacts and the
spectacular crystallized skeleton of a Maya princess are discovered in the
depths of Xibalba. We return to our hotel late in the afternoon. O/N San
Ignacio. B/L/D
Day 4:
Transfer to Belize City. B

We stay at a nice full service resort in the hills.
Private baths, hot water, all the luxuries.
Activity level:
This is an active trip which involves lots of hiking.
Tikal is an extensive site and the entire day is spent walking trails
between the various temples. Climbing the temples is strenuous, although
not mandatory. In the cave you will be hiking through water and there is a
little swimming at the entrance. Again, another full day of hiking.
Food:
Food on this portion of the trip is mostly in restaurants or the
resort with local style cuisine.
