tranquil Placencia village Where we go:
Toadal Adventure will take you to see some of Belize's highlights including the wonderful barrier reef, lush rain forest, ancient Maya ruins, and small traditional villages.

Placencia Village is the jumping off point for all of our trips and where Toadal Adventure is based. Placencia is located in Southern Belize on a narrow 13 Mile long peninsula bordered by the Caribbean Sea. Placencia claims mainland Belize's best beaches. A small village where fishing meets tourism as the local source of income, Placencia feels undiscovered and remains unspoiled by too many tourists.

A narrow sidewalk, famous as being the world's narrowest "street", runs down the center of the village and is bordered by colorful houses, small hotels and charming restaurants. It's a great place to unwind and get into "Belize Time".

Placencia is a great location from which to visit the rest of southern Belize. The Barrier Reef, archaeological sites, caves, rainforests, jungle rivers, national parks, Garifuna and Maya Villages are all available to visit on day trips out of Placencia. You may wish to add a few days end of your package trip to explore the area.

map of Southern Belize There are islands too numerous to name off shore of Placencia. Small mangroves islands whose roots are the nursery of the sea and are teeming with life from the inner cayes or what locals call "the range". Closer to the barrier reef you will find islands with white sand beaches and palm trees, fringed by turquiose blue water. The Gladden Spit Marine Reserve and Laughing Bird Caye National Park have been set aside as protected areas. Every spring elusive whale sharks visit the area to feed on the reef fish who spawn here.

Blue Creek Village is in the deep southern region of Belize, the Toledo District. This village, tucked into the foothills of the Maya Mountains, is populated by Maya people who still live a traditional lifestyle of subsistence farming. The Maya have inhabited this area for over a thousand years. You can see their history in the archaeological sites of Nim Li Punit and Lubaantun. The cave system at Blue Creek is also known for artifacts found deep inside. Our visit to this area helps to support the Toledo Eco-Tourism Association, which works with locals in sustainable development.

The Bladden Branch of the Monkey River stretches from the Maya Mountains into Monkey River village where it meets the sea. Dense jungle and wildlife are the rule. The upper Bladden is sparsely populated and on your paddle this first day you will most likely encounter no other people, only wildlife. The river is named for the Black Howler Monkeys which inhabit the forest along the river.

Monkey River Village is a small village consisting of a few families who hunt, fish, and are involved in tourism.

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, an hours drive out of Placencia, is a lush tract of jungle which was originally set aside for the protection of the jaguar and other wild-cats of the area. Within the boundaries of this park sits Victoria Peak, the tallest peak in Belize. There are well maintained trails, that wind through the dense forest and along the rivers and streams. Although Jaguar sightings are rare, you are likely to see it's tracks along the trail after the rain, and realize that a jaguar may be watching you. Cockscomb Basin is also one of Belize's premier birding locations with common sightings of tanagers, trogons, and a variety of hummingbirds.
